Summary: Assists the teacher or principal by helping students to achieve the standards and objectives of excellence as set by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Works cooperatively with the principal and teacher in providing a classroom environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional programs and available resource materials.
Essential Duties: (These duties represent a sample and may vary by position.)
• Assists in the instruction of individual students or groups of students in all curricular areas as directed by the teacher.
• Plans and works with teachers in devising special strategies for reinforcing skills and concepts based on the understanding of individual students-their needs, interests, and abilities.
• Operates and cares for equipment and materials for instructional purposes within their assigned classroom(s).
• Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
• Interacts positively with students, parents, and colleagues and facilitates positive interactions among students.
• Collaborates and shares ideas and strategies with other team members.
• Alerts the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
• Participates in in-service training programs for professional growth.
• Assists with school routines and transitions.
• Assists in checking materials, supervising and assessing students as directed by the teacher.
• Assists with student attendance procedures, record keeping, collecting money, ordering materials, and other tasks as assigned.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
Education And Experience
Minimum: Completion of an Associate's Degree or two years of higher education equivalent to 48 credit hours, or ability to pass a formal assessment (Workkey and 96 hours of in-service training), or completion of the NC DOL Apprenticeship Program, or completion of the NC ATA Professional Development.
Desirable: Associate's Degree with a concentration in Education. More than two years of classroom experience.

• Knowledge of specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the position.
• Ability to read a variety to manuals, write documents to present information to parents.
• Ability to understand complex, multi-stepped written and oral instructions.

• Ability to provide a broad range of instructional assistance to teachers and others.

• Skill in problem solving to identify issues and create action plans.
