Job Title: Psych Nurse
A Psych Nurse plays a vital role in the healthcare system by providing specialized mental health care to individuals experiencing psychiatric disorders, emotional distress, and behavioral challenges. The Psych Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for patients with mental health conditions. In every aspect of patient care, the Psych Nurse ensures safety, dignity, and therapeutic support. The Psych Nurse works closely with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to deliver holistic mental health treatment.
The core responsibility of a Psych Nurse includes conducting mental health assessments and monitoring patients' psychological and emotional status. A Psych Nurse administers prescribed medications, observes patient responses, and documents behavioral changes. The Psych Nurse also provides crisis intervention, helping patients manage acute episodes of anxiety, depression, psychosis, or suicidal ideation. In therapeutic environments, the Psych Nurse builds trust and rapport with patients, which is essential for effective psychiatric care.
A successful Psych Nurse must be skilled in communication, empathy, and emotional resilience. The Psych Nurse often works with individuals in vulnerable states, requiring patience and strong interpersonal skills. In addition, the Psych Nurse is responsible for educating patients and families about mental health conditions, coping strategies, and treatment plans. Through continuous support, the Psych Nurse helps patients achieve stability and improve their quality of life.
Responsibilities
• Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.
• Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.
• Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other members of the interprofessional team and patient, family or caregiver in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care. Proactively plans and ensures communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care.
• Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care. Assess patient preferences and barriers to involvement in care, including their values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population-specific needs.
• BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
Education
• Nursing Diploma/Associate's
• Bachelor's Degree - Nursing
